LiftComm Supports MTA Elevator Modernization at Lexington Av/53 St and Canal St Stations

Every day, more than 84,000 people ride elevators at two Manhattan subway stations: Lexington Av/53 St in Midtown and Canal St in Lower Manhattan. Most of them never think about what happens if something goes wrong inside that cab. That is exactly what LiftComm is there for.

As part of the MTA's elevator modernization at both stations, LiftComm provided the emergency communication systems. Not the elevator cab. Not the mechanical equipment. The life safety system. The one that ensures every rider, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing, can reach help the moment they need it.

Both projects were completed on budget and ahead of schedule.

Smarter Communication. Safer Rides.

An elevator intercom is not a convenience feature. It is a life safety system. It is the difference between a rider who can call for help and one who cannot. And for a rider who cannot hear a dispatcher's voice, it has to do more than ring. It has to communicate.

The LiftComm intercoms installed at both locations are:

• ASME A17.1-2019 and ADA compliant

• Built with integrated voice and text communication

• Designed for real-time two-way contact between riders and dispatchers

• Built for the demands of high-traffic transit environments

The Lexington Av/53 St complex serves more than 47,500 weekday riders across the E, F, and 6 train lines, with nine bus route connections. Canal St serves approximately 37,200 riders every weekday. Both figures are from the MTA press release dated March 30, 2026.

Built for Transit. Ready for What's Next.

LiftComm is proud to continue supporting the MTA's accessibility modernization across New York City. The agency completed a record 39 elevator replacements in 2025. These two projects are part of that momentum continuing into 2026.

From Midtown to Lower Manhattan, we deliver communication systems that are secure, durable, and built to perform where the stakes are highest. As elevator replacements continue across all five boroughs, we remain committed to ensuring every rider has a reliable connection when they need it most.
