Three New Elevators Open at 149 St-Hostos as Bronx Station Goes Fully Accessible

LiftComm supplied the emergency communication system for the three new elevators that opened this month at the MTA's 149 St-Hostos station in the South Bronx, making the station fully accessible for the first time. Three cabs, three intercoms, one 120-year-old station finally open to every rider.

Not the cab. Not the machine room. Not the mechanical or electrical equipment. The two-way voice and text intercom inside each cab that meets ASME A17.1-2019 Section 2.27.1.1.3 and lets a rider reach help the moment the doors close.

Smarter Communication. Safer Rides.

The LiftComm system installed in all three new 149 St-Hostos cabs is ASME A17.1-2019 compliant, with two-way voice and text, video acknowledgement, a 45-second auto-reroute when the first responder doesn't answer, and four-hour standby power. It is ADA compliant with visual acknowledgement for hearing-impaired riders. Call traffic stays on-premises inside MTA infrastructure.

On-premises hosting matters in transit. Cloud-hosted elevator phones route emergency traffic through outside vendor infrastructure, a non-starter for the kind of network security a transit agency has to maintain. LiftComm devices integrate directly into the MTA's own network and PBX. PoE-powered units in each cab provision automatically when they're plugged in.

149 St-Hostos: A Transfer Hub Finally Open to Everyone

The 149 St-Hostos station serves 9,000 daily riders in the South Bronx on the 4 line, with transfer access to the 2 and 5 trains. Three new elevators opened this month: one three-stop unit connecting the street, the upper platform, and the lower mezzanine, and two additional units serving the lower platform. The station's 120-year-old headhouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was fully restored as part of the project.

The station was renamed to recognize nearby Hostos Community College and its role in the South Bronx community. For a station this old at a transfer point this busy, going from zero elevators to three is a step change. LiftComm supplied the intercoms inside all three new cabs.

One Specification, Three New Cabs

149 St-Hostos is a three-elevator install, but the LiftComm scope is the same as any single-elevator job. Same hardware, same firmware, same maintenance workflow. Whether a station gets one new elevator or three, the LiftComm scope drops in the same way. That consistency is why LiftComm intercoms are the emergency comms of choice for MTA elevator replacements across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan.

Built for Transit. Ready for What's Next.

Since 2020, LiftComm has supplied the emergency communication system for MTA elevator replacements and new accessibility installs across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. Every one of those cabs meets ASME A17.1-2019 and ASME A17.1-2022: two-way voice and text, video acknowledgement, 45-second auto-reroute, four-hour standby power, and ADA-compliant visual acknowledgement. The architecture LiftComm ships today is the compliant baseline for both editions of the code.

The 2025-2029 Capital Plan invests $7.1 billion in station accessibility, funding 60 additional ADA-accessible stations and 45 more subway elevator replacements. Every one of those elevators needs an emergency phone that meets current code. That is what LiftComm builds.

A 120-year-old station in the South Bronx finally has elevators. Took long enough.
