New York, NY – 11/5/24 – Lift Comm by TEC is proud to support the MTA in enhancing accessibility at the 14 St Subway Station complex, contributing to the ongoing upgrades that ensure safe and reliable transit for all passengers. As part of the ongoing ADA Megaproject, Lift Comm by TEC has supplied and installed advanced intercom systems that will provide all passengers, including those with hearing, vision, or speech impairments, the ability to communicate directly with rescue dispatch via voice or text.

Supporting Accessibility Across the Complex

The recent upgrades at the 14 St Subway Station, which include the opening of two new elevators providing critical access to street-level, uptown, and mezzanine platforms, now feature Lift Comm by TEC’s reliable intercom systems. These systems ensure that every passenger can quickly and effectively request assistance during an emergency regardless of ability.

“Collaborating with the MTA on this critical project is a significant step toward ensuring that all New Yorkers, especially those with communicative impairments, can safely and independently navigate the transit system,” said Eric Schnabolk, President of Lift Comm by TEC. “We are proud to be part of the 14 St Complex upgrade, supporting the MTA’s commitment to safety and accessibility.”

Improving the Overall Experience

The new intercom systems at 14 St align with the latest ASME A17.1-2019 codes, which are essential to ensuring that all public transportation systems remain safe and accessible for people with disabilities. The intercoms feature both voice and text communication capabilities, offering passengers with hearing, vision, or speech impairments the ability to communicate with dispatch and receive timely assistance when needed.

The expanded accessibility features at the 14 St station also include new tactile warning strips, ADA-compliant boarding areas, and a newly expanded mezzanine, all designed to improve the passenger experience for approximately 29,000 daily riders.

A Step Forward for New York’s Transit Accessibility

“As part of our ongoing efforts to modernize New York’s transit infrastructure, these accessibility improvements are crucial,” said MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo. “With the continued support of our partners, like Lift Comm by TEC, we’re getting closer to making the entire 14 St Complex fully accessible to all riders.”

Once completed, the 14 St Complex will have nine new elevators, making it fully accessible, alongside other significant improvements such as new staircases, platform upgrades, and a stunning new artwork display by Fred Tomaselli, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics for all passengers.
