Canada's elevator safety code is CSA B44, published jointly with ASME A17.1 and adopted province by province. The 2019 edition (CSA B44-19) introduced the two-way messaging and text-display requirement — Clause 2.27.1.1 — for new and modernized elevators. As of May 2026, 5 of 13 Canadian provinces and territories require talk-and-text elevator phones: Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec.
This free compliance reference includes the adopted CSA B44 edition for every province and territory, the regulation or adoption document behind each status, and a look ahead at jurisdictions in transition — Manitoba's B44-19 adoption takes effect September 1, 2026, and British Columbia has consulted on adopting B44:19.
Use it to determine whether an elevator project in Canada requires a two-way talk-and-text communication device. Always confirm the current edition with the authority having jurisdiction.
